Curtin BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Measurement of the vestibular aqueduct on CT scans of the temporal bone is important for the detection of large vestibular aqueduct syndrome; typically this is done in the axial plane. We sought to determine the usefulness of reformats performed in the 45° oblique plane for evaluating the vestibular aqueduct. In addition, we provide reference measurements for the vestibular aqueduct in the 45° oblique plane.

Vestibular Aqueduct Measurements in the 45° Oblique (Pöschl) Plane.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The 45° oblique (Pöschl) plane allows reliable depiction of the vestibular aqueduct, with virtually its entire length often visible on 1 CT image. We measured its midpoint width in this plane, aiming to determine normal measurement values based on this plane. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively evaluated temporal bone CT studies of 96 pediatric patients without sen...
متن کاملEVALUATION OF ANATOMICAL VARIATIONS OF VESTIBULAR AQUEDUCT DIMENSIONS IN TEMPOR AL BONE CT SCAN
Various dimensions of the human vestibular aqueduct were evaluated in two groups, patient and control, and these measurements were compared. Both groups were examined clinically, followed by audiometric evaluation and temporal bone high resolution CT scan. It was found that in approximately one third of the patient group (with idiopathic SNHL), the vestibular aqueduct was 1.5 mm or larger. ...
متن کاملInfluence of model based iterative reconstruction algorithm on image quality of multiplanar reformations in reduced dose chest CT
BACKGROUND Model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) reduces image noise and improves image quality (IQ) but its influence on post-processing tools including maximal intensity projection (MIP) and minimal intensity projection (mIP) remains unknown. PURPOSE To evaluate the influence on IQ of MBIR on native, mIP, MIP axial and coronal reformats of reduced dose computed tomography (RD-CT) ches...

OBJECTIVE To characterize the appearance of the normal vestibular aqueduct on coronal computed tomography (CT). DESIGN Retrospective evaluation of routine CT images of the temporal bones. SETTING Private tertiary care center. PATIENTS Twenty-four children and young adults (14 females and 10 males), aged 2 to 24 years (average age, 10 years). MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES Axial CT images were e...
متن کاملOverlapping thin-section fast spin-echo MR of the large vestibular aqueduct syndrome.
PURPOSE To evaluate a high-resolution, thin-section fast spin-echo MR imaging technique of the inner ear to identify the large vestibular aqueduct syndrome seen on temporal bone CT scans. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the temporal bone CT scans of 21 patients with hearing loss and enlarged bony vestibular aqueducts by CT criteria. High-resolution fast spin-echo MR imaging was then perfo...
